So, played 3 great, quick, and brutal demo games with Johnny Grogan at an LGS in Abington, Massachusetts, USA yesterday.
We had a 2x2 mat, a ruined farmhouse, some low barriers, 3 stands of trees, and a few of the donut terrain pieces in play.
He was using the Volksgrenadiers vs my US Airborne. I had literally just opened up my box when I got there, so I was proxying in some Dust 1947 USMC models.
Game 1 he won initiative and deployed his NCO and sniper in the middle, then one of each German more on the flanks. His NCO moved forward with Move & Fire but failed to make the cover of the stand of trees right in front of him and with his shots all being at long range at my models in cover, he was pretty ineffective.
I had deployed my NCO and one trooper just behind a low barrier, with my sniper on my left and my other trooper just left of midline.
My first action was to move up to the cover and shooting an aimed shot at his NCO wounding him.. then moving up with my NCO and firing at his down body scoring a 6 and taking him out! First blood to the US.
At this point we realized that you really can't leave your models NOT in cover... lol... so the Germans moved up to the farmhouse and started firing down on my NCO and his trooper, wounding my NCO at long range despite the cover. My sniper was able to draw LOS to his sniper who had left his base edge just visible next to the farmhouse... and proceed to wound him, but couldn't finish him off.
Then the Germans realized that their submachine guns are much better up close... so the assault german leaped into the farmhouse and advanced, wounding my trooper next to my NCO and then killing my NCO.
My sniper turned his attention on the one German trooper that was still hanging back, wounding him... but again, unable to get the final kill. At this point, with the SMG german closing in on my wounded soldier, I had no LOS to him and started to move my remaining trooper over, but it was too late and the German SMG finished off my wounded trooper for the win.
We re-racked and this time I won initiative. We re-shuffled the terrain, moving a small trench section over to my left flank and putting more tree stands in the middle. I deployed my sniper to my left, then Frank, then my NCO in the middle, then my final trooper on my right flank. The Germans deployed a bit bunched up in the middle and Johnny left his NCO a bit exposed. I immediately activated my Sniper, moved up, aimed, and despite him being In Cover, rolled double 6's and took his NCO off the board right away.
His return fire wounded my NCO, and then we hit a bit of a stalemate as each of started slowly moving up the board... I used Frank to drop Opportunity fire down my left flank to prevent Germans moving up to the Trench, while the Germans were taking pot shots while moving into the middle of the board. At this point i realized how quick Frank could be, and he sprinted forward to engage a wounded German in melee, successfully taking that German out. He survived the return fire and then ran across the back row of the German lines and assaulted a 2nd German that had been wounded in the last round of fire and took him out for a comfortable US Airborne win.
This put us with 1 win each so of course we needed a third game. I won initiative and we moved the farmhouse to the center and the trench to the german left flank. I went first and moved up aggressively with Dean on the left and my sharpshooter on the right... and that was a mistake! The Germans launched a blitz on my right flank closing to within 10" of the sharpshooter and wounding him while staying out of LOS of the rest of my army.
In retaliation, I sprinted Frank down the edge and launched a Frag Grenade into the German lines.. only causing 1 wound!!! Frank retreated to cover but that left me with a German submachine gun threatening my middle. And it did not disappoint.. he killed my sniper, turned the corner, and took 3 shots at my NCO... and MISSED ALL 3! Lol.
So my NCO went after him... moving to get a clear LOS .. and missed... so assaulted him... 7 dice vs 4... and I failed to wound.. and took a wound in return.. and swung again... and we both missed.. and swung again, causing a wound.. but taking one in return, killing my NCO!!!
The Germans circled around Frank ... and moved up to within 5u and 2u of his cover... and gunned him down. The US Airborne was a bit too aggressive... getting within short range of those SMGs and trying a Hail Mary with Dean's grenade failed and my NCO being unable to deal with a German in the open was pretty sad! Lol.
All in all, 3 great games! Definitely going to assemble and start painting my models today and gonna start painting up those donuts ASAP!
